Special Programs
CONCURRENT ADMISSIONS PROGRAM:
Seniors may register for college courses at SUNY Binghamton and/or Broome Community College while still in high school. Courses may be taken during the summer and regular school year. See your counselor for more information.
YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM:
The Youth Apprenticeship Program is designed to offer high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to explore the direct connection between school learning and employment while working in their occupational field of interest. Students apply and interview for paid positions in local companies.
Youth apprentices leave school for part of the day (if their schedule allows) and usually work 10-20 hours per week, rotating through a series of placements at the worksite. In each rotation, apprentices work under the direction of a coach or mentor. Summer employment is at the discretion of the employer. Students must provide their own transportation.
The New York State Education Department has approved youth apprenticeship as a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program where students earn Regents credit for their successful participation in the program. Students in the two-year program receive a total of 5 credits (2 each year for the work experience/i for the Senior Project). Students in the one-year option for seniors receive a total of 3 credits (2 for the work experience! 1 for the Senior Project).
Students learn marketable job skills such as:
communications skills, time management, responsibility, teamwork, professional ethics, and computer competencies. They also learn a host of technical competencies that are aligned with the NYS Learning Standards for Career Development and Occupational Studies (CDOS), English Language Arts (ELA),
Mathematics, Science and Technology (MST), and the National Skill Standards (where applicable) .
NEW VISIONS PROGRAM:
New Visions is a i-year BOCES program for high school seniors. It provides an in-depth overview of a chosen professional field by placing the student into an actual work environment. Career academies currently exist in the areas of Health, Education and Human Development, Law and Government. New Visions integrates English, Government and Economics into a meaningful curriculum based on the career interest area. The classroom is located in the job area of the chosen course of study.
Students are selected based on a rigorous application and interview process . These students must be academically strong and must have completed three years of Regents Math, Science, English and Social Studies. Interested students should see their counselor.
COMPUTER COMPETENCIES:
In June 1994, the Windsor Board of Education, at the recommendation of the high school faculty and administration, approved that all students graduating from Windsor Central High School in June 1995 and thereafter, will have demonstrated computer competency in word processing, database and spreadsheets, including graphing from spreadsheets. This is a requirement for graduation. If a student is competent in any or all of the three areas -word processing, database and spreadsheets/graphing, they take the appropriate test and demonstrate competency in that area. If they do not presently have that competency, the school will give them instruction to help each student pass the test or a student can enroll in a computer class.
PROJECT LEAD THE WAY:
The high school program is a four year sequence of courses which, when combined with traditional mathematics and science courses in high school, introduces students to the scope, rigor and discipline of engineering prior to entering college. However, those not intending to pursue further formal education will benefit greatly from the knowledge and logical thought processes that result from taking some or all of the courses provided in the curriculum.
BCC FAST FORWARD PROGRAM:
BCC Fast Forward is a program which makes it possible for a student to take college-level courses, and earn college credit at Windsor High School.
Every BCC Fast Forward student will have all of the privileges and responsibilities of a pert-time student at BCC.
A student activities fee is inculded in the tuition cost. That fee pays for a BCC Student Handbook, and a BCC student indentification card. Your BCC ID card will give you access to the libraries at Broome Community College and Binghamton University, and to BCC sporting events, as well as discount at local stores.
Taking certain courses now will also give you a head start on general course requirements when you start in college after high school.
BCC Fast Forward student receive a two-thirds discount on their portion of the cost of education when the courses they take are offered at their high schools. New York State pays approximately one third of the cost, your home county pays one third of the cost, and you - the student - pay one third of the cost of education in the form of tuition |
